Location great
Location was great...you can walk to the beach. However, it was raining so much during the time of year we stayed, several sites were under water. Luckily we were able to change to a site more high and dry.
Barrier Island Park
This barrier island park has almost 2,000 acres. There is a central dump station and 2 shower houses. The campsites are located behind the dunes in a pine forest. Although there are no ocean views, the sites are only a quarter of a mile from the beach and the gulf. Lovely, restful place.
2nd Trip
Just left this morning and I must say, this is a hidden gem of a SP. Nice camp ground, GREAT BEACHES and close to some very cool undiscovered old Florida towns. Only caution, the 'skeeters are really bad and the SP doesn't do enough to knock 'em down so bring A LOT of bug spray. Only 4 stars because of the 'skeeter problem this trip.
A true gem on the Forgotton Coast
This is a beautiful rustic state park on the “forgotten coast” in the northern panhandle of Florida. The campground is well maintained with two bath houses. Most of the sites are very deep and spacious, especially the gulf side. They do have pads for handicapped but the majority is just sand with water and electric hook ups, no sewer.
They do not have a camp store or washer-dryer, but you can rent kayaks at the entrance station or purchase a tee-shirt. They have a few nature trails for the hikers in the crowd and even a primitive campground at the Eastern tip of the island.
AT&T cell service is spotty at best and Verizon seems to have better coverage, hence I am able to upload this review using our Verizon My-Fi. However, it is slow, slow, slow so I only check email once a day.
If you are looking for something other than a tranquil beaches or fishing, then this isn’t the park for you. It is at the Eastern end of St. George Island and IS NOT like Top Sail, Grayton Beach or St Andrews. It’s a slow pace, languid park destination in a low key section of Florida. Apalachicola is about 20 miles away and we really enjoy snooping around the interesting stores and picking up fresh shrimp and oysters.
All in all, this is one of my favorite panhandle state parks and one worth checking out.
