Beautiful Beach... Crowded Campground

We had high hopes for this campground after some glowing reviews from friends. We booked a site according to the Michigan reservation system that said it was 'secluded', level and large enough for a 40' RV.

The site was actually rather unlevel and our 35' motorhome barely fit in... spot 108 is very oddly shaped. And it definitely wasn't secluded. The front view is of the housing neighborhood across the road, and the site was clearly visible from the park road and backed up to two other sites. We had a family reunion that moved in at the site next to us, that were up to all hours of the morning around the campfire.

In the morning, we requested a move to another site we liked better - and the staff was very accommodating. Unfortunately, there are few sites within this campground that are our style. Most are tightly packed in, unlevel and offer little to no division.

The beaches here are lovely - although not too sandy. And, there is a great bakery in walking distance of the campground across the street.

We had boostable Verizon and AT&T 4G service.

A gem of a park!

What a beautiful park! Most of the sites are spacious, and many have a decent amount of privacy. If you book in advance (or are able to snag a last minute cancellation) they also have fantastic beachfront sites.

The beach here is sandy and wonderful. Great for walking, relaxing or swimming. The trail system is rather small, but the main trail will take you right into the adorable town of Harrisville.

Some unique features include: the firewood vending machine, delivery of a rack of firewood to your site and community dump station hoses.

We had decent AT&T and Verizon 4G service, which a booster helped with.

Private Sites!

We asked our readers for recommendations for state parks in the middle of Michigan - and they all said there was nothing. We disagree, this park is a keeper!

There are two loops, that are fairly identical. Each provides back in paved sites that are fairly secluded with trees on three sides. Some of them can feel a bit close together, but most should provide a feeling of seclusion.

However, every two sites shares electrical hook-ups, so you may need 50-75' of extension cord. There are water spigots throughout, but none will stay 'on' so not ideal for filling your tanks - do that at the fill & dump station at the entrance to the loops.

There are hiking trails accessible from the campground, but we didn't get to check many of them out due to rains. The lake is pretty however and also a quick walk.

Nice bonus: Full on sorted recycling center!

Cellular signals for Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile were quite faint here. But with some of our boosting gear and roof mounted antenna, we were able to get all three up to very usable 4G.

Beautiful State Park!

What a gem of a state park! Most every site in the park is large, with lots of division between sites provided by trees and shrubs.

The trails within the park are really well maintained and marked, making going for a quick hike from the campground a joy. There's a couple of lakes, with boat launches for kayaking - but not much else to distract you here. A great get-away!

All sites are electric only, but there is a dump station and water fill at the entrance of the loops.

We had ample Verizon & AT&T LTE here.

Lovely Park!

We loved our stay at Indiana Dunes. The sites are all nicely spaced, and many of them receive shade. We especially loved the sites that back up to the dunes.

Great hiking trails accessible from the campground, and easy access to the Lake Michigan shoreline with a beach. Lovely views of Chicago - catch a sunset, for sure!

You're also within easy reach of amenities - like a train stop into Chicago (much better than driving in!), and shopping & dining. The campground even gave us a coupon book on check-in, which was quite handy.

Like all IN State Parks, you pay a one-time entrance fee for your entire stay - here it is $5 for state residents, and $10 for out of state. During the week, the park has a lot of openings, and weekends it is typically booked solid and can feel a bit crowded. Sun - Wed nights were $19+tax, and Thu-Sat was $26.

Decent Option

For staying in Elkhart, this is a decent enough option. It's close to shopping and amenities, and easy to get to many of the attractions in the area. There is highway noise, and a RV service center next door that is quite busy during the day.

The sites are all pull-thrus, and most of them on grass. They're very long, but not too wide. Not too much special about them - typical row parking.

This campground is however great for meet ups, mini-rallies and special events - as there is a conference center on site with multiple rooms. So for that purpose, it worked out great for us.

There's some short nature trails behind the park, and swimming pool was refreshing. Overall, the park is well maintained and it was a pleasant enough stay.

Park WiFi was overloaded much of our stay, even when not even close to full. We had great AT&T and Verizon 4G signals however.

Price reflects 30A site with Escapee's discount.

A little run down

The park itself is nice enough, and large with lots of hiking trails, a general store and cabins.

However the campground is a little run down. The sites are gravel back-ins, and some of them quite unlevel. On many loops, the electrical hook-ups are shared between two sites and require a 100' or more of extension cord to reach. Very odd.

The sites are decently spaced out, but there's not much distinction or privacy between them.

We paid the weekend rate of $26/night plus tax and park entrance fee. We felt the price was a bit on the high side for what is offered, especially considering weekends are pretty chaotic with families. We might consider returning during the week for both the cheaper rate AND less crowds.

AT&T and Verizon both had decent signals.

Peaceful and Tranquil

We loved staying at this park - exactly what we needed to relax for a bit.

There are two sections to the campground - the full hook-up sites which are tucked in amongst an old Christmas tree farm. They offer lots of shade and privacy, but are $26+ tax from Sun - Wed. We selected an electric only site, which don't offer much division between the sites - but they are well spaced out. Since there was hardly anyone there, we picked a nice site with a view of the field and enjoyed only paying $19/night. (Thurs-Sat nights the rates are a bit higher).

On top of the nightly fee, there's also a one-time park entrance fee of $8 for out of state folks.

The park is newer and very well maintained. There are lots of hiking trails accessible from the campground, and we enjoyed utilizing them. There's also some historical stuff to check out, including a working farm.

Both Verizon & AT&T had solid 4G service.

Pleasant Stay, Convenient Location

We were surprised with how close to the interstate this park is - but yet, the road noise wasn't that bad.

The sites are all large, with a good amount of space between them. The park seems very well maintained, and the hosts on duty were super friendly and helpful. Very warm welcome.

Also loved their online reservation system, which accepts same day reservations and you pick your spot online. Perfect for our spontaneous ways.

The park is only a touch out of town, with nothing in walking distance. But just a short drive away from the mall, grocery shopping and dining. A good base camp for our needs of stocking up and doing some errands.

We had excellent AT&T and Verizon 4G signals, and the park provided WiFi is run by TengoNet. The WiFi was hit or miss, and has a 200mb per code limit on it. Ask for multiple passes if you need more :)

Price Increases

We were meeting some fellow RVing friends in St. Louis and recommended CQ again based on our previous stay.

When our friends called to get a reservation, they were quoted $20/night. Awesome! So we called just an hour later to get a reservation ourselves, and were quoted $40/night for a weekly stay. They couldn't explain why the difference in price, and even confirmed it was for the same exact type of space our friends just booked.

We decided not to make a reservation right then but when we did call a week later - we were quoted $45/night this time for a weekly rate! What? Apparently, their daily rate is now across the board $53/night for all of the spots - with discounts for club memberships and weekly rates.

We were told a manager would call us back to explain why our friends were getting a much better rate than us - but they never did. Instead, we tried Cahokia RV Parque about 5 miles away, and were happy there.

We visited our friends often at the CQ during their visit, and they never got a straight answer either as to why they got a $20 rate for the same exact spot we had during our prior visit.

Crazy.

In our opinion, the new rates are too steep unless for a special occasion.
