4 star campground at a 5 star park
The only reason this is a 4 start campground is that it doesn't have showers. It is a self-serve campground; you pick out a site then go back, fill out an envelope, put the top half into the board showing which campgrounds are taken and the other half with your money in a slot. Real simple. This otherworldly landscape may not be for everyone, but it fascinated us. Most sites are very ample, set among the lava with a black cinder base. Each site has a picnic table and barbecue grill. Sites are level or easily levelable with blocks. Very clean, bright bathrooms with auto flush toilets! Evening hike and ranger talk each evening even in late September. Lots of new facilities and road upgrades thanks to Federal stimulus money. Water faucet at or near each site. Cannot attach a hose but the water is drinkable. Cash or checks only. Open until the snow closes the road. Our Golden Age Passport got us into the park free and let us pay half price for the campsite.
