MI State Parks [admin edit] out-of-state campers

Straits State Park - beautiful! But very costly for out-of-staters! Had to pay $43/night w/camp fee and ?Passport? or some such nonsense. 2 nights cost us $86. No hot water in showers, electricity only - no water or sewer hookup. Grew up in Michigan, grad of MSU, combat wounded vet, BUT now live in another state, so get all the extra charges. Will never use a Michigan State Park again. Military FamCamps charge $17/night; most private $20-28. Come to Arkansas State Parks to see how it is done right! Jim

On the water

We explored the park before choosing a campsite. Sites 4A, 5A, and 6A were all vacant. They all were RIGHT ON THE WATER with a wonderful view of the Mackinac Bridge. The sites across from them were full. We asked why no one had chosen those sites and were told, "They don't have electric." Well, we can live a few days on our batteries and propane. It was wonderful, seeing the bridge illuminated at night.

Sites 1 to 18 are near the shore and the best. 'A' sites 1 to 10 are ON the water, but no electric. Sites 52 to 254 are in the woods a hike away from the water. The road is blacktopped and sites are either grass or gravel. Many of the sites are uneven.

Michigan state parks all have wonderful tiled bathrooms; individual showers entered from a hallway or, sometimes, from outside.

This campground is 5 stars for the view and the bathrooms, but 4 because of the road and grass/gravel sites.

Beautiful waterfront sites!

We pulled in while passing through just to see what was available. We were able to snag a waterfront spot with a fabulous view of Mackinac Bridge. The spot was huge, with a shaded area for the picnic table. And there is fairly easy beach access.

Some of the non-waterfront sites were ok, and some seemed quite small. If a waterfront hadn't been available we probably would have moved on.

There's a grocery store within walking distance, which is quite nice. The walk into town is a good 2-3 miles.

We had great reception on both Verizon and AT&T, and would definitely return here in the future.
