Traveler Reviews
History
This is a nice park especially if you are interested in history! It is very quiet and somewhat remote. Pads are concrete with gravel drives. Site #2 is level. As mentioned in another review there are two campgrounds with the upper one having the longer sites. We didn?t have to unhook with a 23foot travel travel and there are bigger trailers here. There is a steep hill to get to the upper campground. Historical buildings, cemetery, submarine, and remnants of forts onsite.
Nice, quiet campground
If you need tv (unless you have satellite), wifi (unless you have a personal hotspot), and phone service (unless you're willing to travel 5 miles into town), this is not the place for you. But if you enjoy peace and quiet in a beautiful setting, you'll like this campground. There's an upper and a lower campground. You have to go up a steep hill to get to the upper campground so we stayed in the lower one, and we're glad we did. The upper campground is where the tent sites are located, and they're put to good use by scout troops and school groups on the weekend. The road into the campground is narrow, but the campground was practically empty while we were there so it wasn't an issue. The campground is a perfect place to relax, the people are nice, and the museum and battlefield are free for campers. You can wash your RV for $5 and your car for $2. The laundry has two washers ($1) and two dryers ($0.75). There's a shower/restroom at the upper campground. The shower/restroom/laundry for the lower campground is at the top of a hill, but there are stairs to get to it or you can drive up to it. Since we would rather use the shower and bathroom in our RV anyway, this wasn't a concern for us.
tip:
The Old Country Store Restaurant on Rt. 61 in Lorman has an all-you-can-eat buffet for $15.95 that is absolutely great. Home-cooked Southern food, including the best fried chicken we've ever had. If you're lucky, Mr. D will be there and will serenade you at your table.
We really like this park!
We really like this park! Lots of Civil War history. Warm welcome, friendly staff, shade sites, clean, neat piece of land, quiet and peaceful. We liked it a lot. Interesting museum. Free Wi-fi at the museum/office. Showers/toilet area were clean but dated, no biggie as all the site are full hook up. It is located next to Nuclear Plant (less than 1/2 mile).
All sites are easy to get backed into, and the upper sites you have to climb a steep hill to get to. Better cell service on the hill.
Great staff and a lot of Civil War History. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
We always stop on the way through.
