BIG park

This park has 1800 sites, most occupied by snowbirds etc. but they are very open to overnighters. Multiple pools and hot tubs, nice showers and bathrooms, paved roads. Sites are gravel with a concrete pad for your table etc. Of course, no table is provided and no fire ring. Gobs of activities. The day we arrived there was happy hour from 3 to 5, square dancing in the evening, bridge in another room. Expensive for one night but I gather it is appreciably less of you stay a week or more.

I think you could walk 3 miles and never duplicate the route or leave the park.

For RVs 29 ft or less

I can't believe the other reviewer -- all the campsites indicate their length and there are NO campsites that will fit anything near 41' long. In fact, as you pass the Visitor Center there is a sign that says that only vehicles 29' or less can go past that point.

The sites are wooded, which I would imagine is wonderful in the summer, and a high RV would have a problem in many of the sites. We are 10' 9" high and we had to place our RV just right in site 1. Site 9, however, was no problem. The sites are ample otherwise, sitting at the base of a canyon wall. Come with water and don't expect showers.

You can reserve a shuttle ride up the mountain and then hike down, but you need to do it the day before at the Visitor Center. We loved Chiracahua!

Tidy park, nice hosts

The park sits about a block and a half off the main north/south road through Alamogordo. The main building has a mini store, a clubhouse room with TV, ping pong, football table, books etc. they have coffee every morning. The women's showers are currently being renovated, so they have built a separate entry to 2 do the men's showers.

Would definitely stay here again. Road is gravel, sites are gravel. Concrete picnic table sitting on a concrete pad at the site. Fire only in the barbecue grill on a post.

Best of a bad lot

All gravel, typical of this part of the world. Nice pool with the lodge, but no bathhouse for RVers. Quiet. Restaurant. Sites are ample. I guess you get what you pay for!

No big rigs

There is a sharp left hand turn to get up into the camp. I don't think anything over 30' could navigate it. All gravel with the sites snug as a bug around the edges. Too sad to stay!

Go for the hot springs

Nothing special for an RV. Gravel space, cheek to jowl, small table. But across the street are 5 hot tubs sitting above the Rio Grande. Included in the price, 8 am tom10 pm. Worth it

Close to the Jersey Shore

Typical of NJ state parks, there is no electricity at the sites. Water faucets are scattered throughout the campground. There are lots of mature trees in the main part of the park and and open area near the beginning of the campground. The trees make it a real challenge to get into the campsites, even for a small RV like ours (25').

Showers are old and worn and crummy. Sites are dirt. There are few really flat sites.

So why am I giving it 3 stars? Only because there aren't any other options for camping in this part of NJ! In fact, of all the states we have been in (and we have RVed in all the lower 48), NJ has the fewest campgrounds and the poorest state park facilities! But if you need a place to spend some nights and don't want to stay in a Walmart, this will do.

A Port in the Storm but...

If you need a campground in mid-NJ and your height is less than 11' and you don't need electricity, this park will do. The sites are packed sand (not at all loose) and flat. I don't think there was a site that we couldn't have parked in and leveled easily. The sites are HUGE. While you can see your neighbors, they are pretty far away.

But because it has no electricity (and none of the NJ state parks seem to) and lots of shade, we stressed out our RV by driving comparably little and using our batteries for 3 nights for power. Admittedly, we weren't being especially frugal, but still...

The park has lots of trails. We saw many people on foot. And, although it is divided by the NJ Parkway, the road noise is hardly noticeable. Chalk that up to no trucks on the parkway!

The gates close at 6 PM (in October they do, anyway) and we just squeezed in minutes before they were closed. They give you a code for the exit gate when you check in, but we got there after the office closed, so -- no code. Luckily, we didn't need to leave. We did get the code but on the last day we left before the 'in' gate opened, but the 'out' gate was standing wide open. (shrug)

Away from it all

We were really scrabbling for a place to stay this night, almost ready to do the Walmart bit. There are precious few campgrounds in this part of the country. I called the campground to see if they were open and they said that they usually aren't open except on weekends at this time of the year, but that they would be glad to let us in (there is a gate) if we wanted to camp. We did.

We followed the directions on the website (VERY important to do that and to NOT rely on your GPS -- it will get you in trouble) and called again when we arrived. The owner came over, checked us in and let us in. The family has done a fabulous job of creating flat sites in a very hilly area. It is heavily wooded with lots of mature trees. The road and sites are gravel. The bathroom are okay but not exceptional. They have a lot of activities on the weekends after Labor Day. While there is wifi, the wifi only works close to the office. We didn't see the pool; it was in a different area of the park.

We thank them very much for giving us a home for the night.

Pickerel Point -- YES

There are 2 campgrounds in this park; we stayed in Pickerel Point and can't comment on the other campground. It is our understanding that the campground was recently renovated and it shows. The facilities are in perfect working order and they've thought of everything. The bathrooms were spotless, completely stocked with paper goods at all times throughout the weekend. The showers had plenty of hot water and were very clean.

There are LOTS of trails in the park, lots of biking opportunities, lots of boating to be done. The lake is calm and beautiful.

Now we did have a bit of a problem finding a campsite where we could level our RV (we don't have built-in levelers). It was in early October, during the week, so we had lots of sites to pick from. They intermix RV and tenting sites, putting the RVs up at the road and the tents down by the water, so you may be looking downhill at a group of tenters.
