Better than we Expected

There aren't too many options in St. Louis, and when family can't park our RV during our visits - we have in the past gone to the Casino Queen. But with their recent price increase, we decided to give Cahokia RV Parque a try.

And we are very glad we did. Friendly staff, the 30A spots were decently spaced and the location actually worked out better for us. While the CQ is across from the Arch and has access to public transit, the Cahokia RV Parque is actually more accessible to basic shopping and getting to South County, where our family is.

The laundry facilities where a bit cramped, and the WiFi was hit or miss. There is significant road and train noise, but you also get that at the Casino Queen. We really enjoyed the BBQ place onsite - good affordable food. And the surrounding neighborhood seemed just fine, several police officers frequent the BBQ restaurant too.

All and all, we like that we have this option for future visits. We wouldn't hesitate to return.

Still Beautiful!

We returned to this park after our memorable experience here in 2010.

Our only big update to our review is that we felt the sloped nature of the spots a lot more in our 35' motorhome than we did in our previous 17' travel trailer. We just could not get level with the wood blocks we had on board.

Reserve America has all of the spots marked as 'slightly sloped' - but they all vary quite a bit in how level they are.

Oh, and a $6/night price increase for the same spots.

For cellular:

AT&T had boostable 4G available
Verizon & T-Mobile were pretty much unusable here

Perfection

Other RV Park Owners - Take Note. This is one that sets the bar of what makes a perfect park.

1) Scenic location along the banks of the Mississippi River
2) Close, but not so close, to a major city to explore
3) Large, well spaced water front sites - optimized for motorhomes and 5th wheels to get their best possible views to watch the barges go up and down the river.
4) Super friendly staff with flexible reservation policies
5) Well maintained everywhere you look, without feeling like a classy 'resort'.

and then add in free WiFi (well, it could work a little better) and FREE laundry in some of the cleanest and highest tech machines we've encountered in a campground?!?

Oh, and really reasonable rates.

It's pure bliss. If they added in a hot tub, we'd probably never leave. Well, until the floods lifted us away anyway.

Well done Tom Sawyer's. You've won our hearts.

AT&T & Verizon LTE work just fine here.

Peaceful and Perfect

Love that Georgia State Parks let you pick your own site upon arrival - this means you can choose what works for you! When we arrived we took a look at the lovely lake side camp loop, and while we liked the views it seemed a little too crowded on the weekend for us.

So we went over area 5, and found a super nice secluded feeling back-in site surrounded by trees. We had originally paid for 2-nights, and ended up extending for 10. The sites are well developed and spacious.

We loved the hiking trails throughout the park, and several of them come right up to the camping areas.

The town of Pine Mountain is just outside the park from the back entrance, and there's a few resources there for groceries and dining.

We got great Verizon LTE and a booster helped us get a decent AT&T 4G/ HSPA signal.

We'd definitely come back here! Make sure to get frequent camper card and start earning free nights!

Much Improved!

Lots of improvements have been made to Wickham Park since our prior reviews. Many new sites added, and all made to be full hook-ups.

On this visit, we experienced no weirdness as we had on the previous visits below - so hopefully lots of internal changes have happened as well.

Would recommend avoiding the 'C' section if you can - as this was the previous overflow area that is now tightly space full hook-up sites. We love A and B however, lots of room to park and feel space around you.

No improvements

After checking out other options in the area since our initial stay in 2011, we returned to Barrington as it was easy to book a reservation online for a short stop in the area.

We knew full well what to expect - not much character, boring non maintained sites, mobile homes as neighbors and non-RV centric hook-ups. Again, we were not able to make use of the 50amp service as it was situated way in the back of our site, so we had to use our 30amp extension cord to plug in.

But, at least we weren't disappointed. And the staff was extremely friendly and gave us quite the welcome kit full of Encore goodies (playing cards, wine opener, etc.).

The rates had also increased to $36/night plus a $3 resort fee. Thankfully, our Passport America discount was honored bringing the rate to about $21/night. So, for an inexpensive stay to be near family - it did the trick. But not the type of park we'd seek out.

Decent State Park

We love checking out state parks, and this one is only ok.

The park itself doesn't really offer too much. It's very large and spread out, with the campground being 3 miles from the entrance. We went on several of the hikes, but they seemed to mostly be old service roads to the orchards, and not necessarily scenic. They're also very sandy, making it difficult to walk on.

The campground itself is also only ok. It's a very long drive down to it, but the sites don't really offer the sense of isolation and privacy that we've become fond of in other Florida State Parks. The sites are all gravel and very defined, and a bit too close together by state park standards. They offer little isolation between each other, not much of a view and none of them have shade. Other than being in walking distance to two fishing piers, the campground is pretty generic feeling and could have very well been anywhere - so why so far away from the entrance?

But, on the plus side, the park seems to be able to accommodate RVs of all sizes with several very long pull-thrus and spacious back-in sites.

There's also ample LTE signal within the park for AT&T and Verizon, and marginal for T-Mobile.

All and all, just an 'eh' feeling for us as compared to other state parks out there. But if looking to avoid private RV parks in the area, this could be a fine choice.

Still Great.. and Getting Even Better!

We stayed for 2 months at one of our favorite campgrounds in the 2014 winter, and really appreciated all of the improvements the park has been making. Freshly painted buildings and updated landscaping really make this place even more inviting. They even upgraded the laundry facilities by adding in more units. All of these upgrades of course also come with new slightly increased rates - which we still think are a bargain.

While were there, they also switched their reservation system from pencil & paper to computer - a much needed improvement. We still recommend reconfirming your reservation, as they tend to have a pretty high inaccuracy rate. Several of our friends who joined up with us over the winter had problems.

The WiFi was pretty strong, and AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon all worked great (sometimes needing boosters).

Just a shame the weather didn't cooperate as much this winter, but this was still a great place to spend some winter months and soak in the warmth of community.

One of our favorites!

Wow, what a treat to stay in this park - exactly our style. We were able to snag site 12 for 5 nights, which is on the older loop with water access.

Yes, some of the sites are smaller and the loop is tighter. But there are plenty of sites in the loop that can accommodate 35-40' rigs - just check Reserve America to pick them out. A little patience in backing into your site, and you are surrounded by glorious privacy! And the sites on the outer loop along the lake all have private walk ways out on the Western Lake for amazing sunset views over the dunes, and there are several kayak launches.

The new loop is nice, but not nearly as private feeling - and no water access. But if you need 50A and sewer, it's still great. We just prefer the old-style Florida state park experience so much more.

We loved our stay here and exploring the quirky contrasts of Grayton Beach to the west and Seaside to the east. Definitely check out The Red Bar, a great location for local music!

Had great Verizon & AT&T LTE service here. We'll definitely be back!

Decent Overnight Stay

On a chilly departure out of Texas heading east, we selected this park so we could keep warm overnight. It served that function quite well!

All sites are pull-thru, which is nice for those just passing though. However, the row we were assigned was a bit tight to approach with all the trucks parked in the sites that overflow onto the street. Also, the hook-ups are at the extreme rear of the site - which almost forced us to have to unhook our towed so that we could both hook-up and be off the street. We could not get completely straight in our site as a result, and our Mini Cooper was left slightly on the grass.

The staff was very friendly on check-in, which was a breeze. There is a free continental breakfast in the morning, which is a nice bonus.

We were however disappointed that the advertised WiFi was down while we were there. Looking at reviews elsewhere, seems this is a common problem for this location - perhaps it's time to not advertise this amenity so prominently?

All and all - we were happy to have an easy place to pull off I-10 for the night, keep warm and rest up for the drive ahead.

Rate reflects our Passport America rate - the full nightly rate of $40 is a bit ridiculous.
