First reason for the poor rating: The "lake" is not a lake, it’s a Beaver Pond. If not for the beaver, this large beaver pond would be a swamp. Swimming in beaver ponds is very risky. Beaver crap contains Giardia. When Giardia get into your stomach it will make you very sick. The camp map shows water along the campsites on the lower road. This is all swamp. Not accessible at all. NO OPEN WATER AT ALL Gosh I hate false advertising for profit.
Second reason: The owners are very O.C.D. (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) while this makes for a very well maintained and clean campground. No blade of grass higher that 3" not a cigarette butt to found anywhere. You know the type.
This comes with a price!
The rules are out of control there are no this and no that signs all over the place. They try to tell you how long you can take a shower for, no radios allow at all. No TV after 10:30. You have to whisper in your campsite after dark or risk being thrown out. They give wives and children (First time campers at their place) a hard time for not knowing which way drive on what roads. The list goes on and on. Just pure control freak out of control.
My daughter and I were playing a few songs (I play acoustic guitar and my daughter plays violin) we had read the rules: Quite time begins at 10:30. Ok its 9:15 we'll play a few songs for our family and friends and stop at 10:30. We play our first song. Keep in mind there is no one in the site next to us or for three sites down from us. Our friends have the cabin across the street and the people across from them. Have just given us a round of applause for the first song we played. We play two more songs and people are walking buy the site clapping and thanking us for the free live entertainment.
Then the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder noise officer shows up. The guy on the their web page. (This the same guy that leaf blows the porches on all the cabins all day instead of using a broom. That’s right a leaf blower.) He comes flying up to our to our site at 9:30 on his golf cart with a giant spot light in his hand and says: " You'll have to stop playing" Why, I say? What time is it? He says, “Its not so much the time, its that we don't allow music at the campground not even radios”. What!!!
I have no problem with rules, just as long as I know them up front. I have been to a 100 campgrounds and never heard anything so stupid before as No Music and Radio’s before quiet time. But if that’s you’re rules. Fine. BUT THE LEAST YOU CAN DO IS PUT IT IN THE RULE BOOK.
All this made for a very nerve racking stay, wondering all the time if you might be breaking some rule that was penciled in the book just for you. We'll never go there again and I'll tell this story every chance I get.
THIS IS A FORCED QUIET CAMPGROUND, VERY NICE FOR OLD PEOPLE AND KIDS THAT CAN’T SPEAK. JUST REMEMBER TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLOSED WHEN SWIMMING IN THE BEAVER POND AS WELL STAYING AT YOUR CAMPSITE.
We stayed for two days and our site was overlooking the lake. I had to level a little more than I like to but that was my choice. The pull thrus overlooking the lake are perfect for 33 or less motorhomes . I have a 39 ft and that is why I had to level a little more. Look in the rest of the campground and you will find beautiful level sites. I am sitting at the site writing this , the sun has just gone down and it is a great view. Some traffic noise up in the front but not bad . Peaceful and good people. It has everything you need and is close to some neat little towns. Ride the cog railroad to mt . Washington , you are a short drive away . Time to get some sleep and head to lake placid.
