Awesome Experience
Stayed 4 nights in campground and had an awesome experience. This was the 1st camping trip we took our 6 year old grand daughter on. We stayed on the Lover's Leap loop where the sites are bigger and can be reserved. This park has very nice bath rooms that are very well maintained. The showers are private, outside entrance to 4 separate showers with lockable doors. Also had a nice laundry area.We have camped in GA, SC, NC and now VA. If this is a typical VA state park, then VA blows the other 3 states away.
Great hiking trails. We did the birding trail which goes around the Block House and gazebo and it was our least favorite. It was hot and lot of it was not shaded. This is probably a good trail in the Spring in the early morning with wild flowers blooming and birds are more active. We did startle a resting deer and turkey, so that was good.
Lover's Leap trail is really good and not too difficult. Rode the chair lift down to the tunnel. Nice short ride and most of it was not too high off the ground. You can hike down and then ride chair lift back up. Keep in mind, chair lift is not always operating and shuts down in the off season. If visiting the park, if at all possible, get down to the tunnel. It is awesome and once down is easy walking. Most people will focus just on the tunnel, take the time to visit the Cart Cabin as well, nice walk!
Pool was nice and enjoyed 3 days of swimming. Though one life guard seem to be channeling Billy from Stranger Things, he appeared to think very highly of himself. :-)
All the staff were great and there were a lot of Summer interns there. Lots of activities going on and free things they would set up for kids.
We will go back!
Natural Tunnel State Park is in Scott County, about 13 miles north of Gate City and 20 miles north of Kingsport, Tenn.. To get there, from I-81, take U.S. 23 North to Gate City (about 20 miles). The turn-off to the park is at mile marker 17.4 on Rt. 23. Take Natural Tunnel Parkway about one mile east to park entrance.
