In the middle of it
Open year round, this campground is about a mile from the hotel and visitor center at Mammoth Hot Springs. All sites are pull thrus and generators are permitted from 8 AM to 8 PM. Some sites are level and most sites are levelable. The sites are gravel; the road is blacktop. Sites are spread over the hill on terraces so there are lots of beautiful views to the east. There isn't much shade since trees don't seem to grow very tall at this point. There are showers, which is unusual for the Yellowstone campgrounds. However, you can't make reservations here; first come, first served. And all of the Yellowstone campgrounds fill up early, even in September. Firewood is for sale and each site has a table and fire pit. I like Madison better because there is more space between the sites, but this is a good setting to explore the Mammoth Springs area.
