Laid back

We stayed over Memorial Day weekend and had a great time! First the basics. This is a South Carolina state park and SC does a great job on a shoestring budget but it is basic. Bathhouses were dated and small but clean. I saw housekeeping at least twice daily on our loop. Sites come with power and water and we did not have issue with either. Based on past experience with beach water at Edisto State park we bring our own water for drinking and cooking and the dog however I did shower and wash dishes and did not detect a lot of salt in it. Hubby liked the fact the power was 30/50 amp but that is not the case on every site. They have 4 loops; 2 are beachfront and 2 are not. We were in the 3rd loop. All but 1 or 2 sites had a good amount of shade and were big. However the twisty/turny road was narrow and tight on our loop getting getting to to the site. It is doable for large campers and motor homes you just have to be aware of what you are doing. Like I said, site was huge but getting in to the site was a challenge. The loop road being narrow and trees right on the edge do not give much room to maneuver. We were on site 199. Hubby (a 30 year truck driver) took some doing to get it in there and that never happens! I saw this on several occasions on both non beach loops. If you have an rv larger than 22' that you are not completely comfortable backing in tight spots look at google earth before booking your site. Yup, some are that tight. Park store has everything you might need for a great weekend including groceries, rv/camping supplies and gift items. Makes sense because the closest grocery store is about 10 miles away. There are 4 beach accesses to a white sand beach that is only for the campground so even at the busiest time of the day it isn't crowded. Park rangers are friendly and helpful but are not intrusive. They do drive through the campground several times a day just to check. The campground is on one end of the park and you have drive to everything else. All activities except climbing the lighthouse are free. The nature center is very informative with both plant and animals found in the park. Fishing pier is also located by the nature center as are the hiking trails on the other end of the park from the campground. I did not walk the marsh boardwalk but it looked nice for wildlife viewing. The drive to the lighthouse and public beach access is beautiful and unlike anywhere else in SC that I have seen and I have grown up here. Climbing the lighthouse is $2.00 pp and the view can't be beat. The information on each landing in the lighthouse is informative. There is also a few exhibits about the lighthouse keepers and their families on the grounds that are free and informative. Stop by the Visitors Center on the way to the lighthouse and learn about is construction and how this state park was built by the CCC and how World War II played a role in it's demise. Last thing is wildlife is everywhere since there still isn't a reliable source for drinking water you will see deer and raccoons throughout the campground during all times of the day which is fun but remember to stow everything when you leave. All in all this is one of my favorite state park campgrounds.

Hugh sites

As usual a wonderful state park. We pre-registered via the sc state park's email. This allowed us to just pull into our site and set up before the spring shower showed up. Our pull-thru site had a HUGH front yard with more than enough room for a provided picnic talble and fire pit and our golf cart, chairs and table. Since we haul a toy hauler we prefer longer sites so we have room to put up screen porch on the ramp and a place to park the truck. This had ample space for all of our needs. The view to Lake Russell was partially obscured because SC parks don't limb up their trees but both of us could still enjoy a view across the lake to the wooded bank on the other side of the cove.
The basics. The sites have 30 amp service with 110 breaker and great water pressure. You will want to hook up the regulator. The isn't sewer hook up but there is a dump station for both the campgrounds. There is also a least 1 bathhouse for each campground that is basic but very clean.
The park store offers loaner fishing equipment and board games. Ther are tennis courts, basketball courts, hiking trails nada very nice swim beach.
Even though this park is in an out of the way part of the state you won't be disappointed if you are looking for a relaxing weekend.

Great sites

We stayed 4 nights in October. What a great campground. We have stayed at several other parks in SC including Table Rock but this one is by far the best. We stayed in the second or "new" campground on the the point or end of the park. As usual there aren't sewer hook up but there are several bathhouses located throughout the grounds. They are pretty spare but are clean and maintained throughout the day. All of the sites are paved and are huge. We had plenty of room for our 30' toy hauler even with the ramp down. Many of the sites do have direct access to the lake and plenty of room for all of your toys. It is acceptable to launch your bot from the public ramp and tie up right at your site. There is even additional trailer parking with in the campground so you don't have to clutter up campsite. All of the sites are paved and reasonably level. Even the "small" sites are huge but campground standards with a good amount of privacy.
The park itself has plenty to do. Near the entrance there is a surprisingly well stock camp store/welcome center along with boat ramps and several day use ares with both beach access and picnic shelters. Between the day areas and the campground thee are several hiking trails. Don't let the map fool you. They are much more varied than they appear on the map. All in all this is by far my favorite state park. We will be back.

Great family campground

We stayed here over Memorial Day weekend and I was very impressed with the family that owns and runs this campground. Their first concern is making sure that every one of their guests is comfortable and having a good time. All weekend long several family members were around the campground either working or cleaning but all would stop to visit with us. During the holiday weekend they played family movies for all to enjoy in the picnic shelter. We were repeatedly asked if we needed anything and having a good time. This is a small campground that is well maintained and clean. The sites are a little on the small side but most are shaded and on the creek. The sites are reasonably level, especially for the mountains. We had enough space for the two of us and the dog but nothing extra. The campground has a separate area for tent camping on the other side of the creek so they are disturbed by the "noise" that can come from an RV.
Since the family has both ponies and goats on site our boxer was very welcome.
The campground is just off I-40 at the end of the road so you have the best of both worlds, easy access to Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway but peace and quiet of the woods. The campground is about 30 minutes from Asheville. All in all, a great place to camp for a reasonable price.

Good for fishing

Very clean and well kept campground but most sites are set up permanentaly. The sites are small with little view but they do have a good amount of shade. However this is a good spot for fishing and boating on High Rock Lake. The marina does have boats for rent but they do not allow for swimming in the lake.

Great for fishing

If you are a fisher person this is the place for you, if not bring a book since lake swimming is not allowed. Campground is very clean and well maintained. However, most sites had RVs set up permantly and the rest are smallish with little view but do have shade. Great for boaters with both a boat ramp and ample parking for boats and trailers. Camp store also has grill and hand-dipped ice cream.

Good value

SC State Parks never disappoint and this one is no different. Most sites will accommodate pull behind trailers with no problem. Due to the topography space for large 5th wheels are limited. Bath houses are older but are kept clean. Lots of moderate hiking trails for both people and horse back riding. Since the campground is behind the lake and on the other side of the park from the farm there is little noise and no disruption from day trippers to the park but you have access to all this park offers. Power and water included in the price and a dump station is located right near the campground exit. The park rangers make themselves available by driving through the campground and will help in any way possible A great place to escape Charlotte for the weekend. Lovely views in the fall.
