Pay to boondock

This is a naturally beautiful state park. There are plenty of trees and trails and wildlife, and it is attached to the State Beach so you can swim, explore tidepools and beach caves, surf, etc..

The only hitch is there are no hookups and you have to pay for showers will special coins you can buy at the park. there are water spickets you can use throughout the park, and we were ale to use one of their pull-through sites. The park was not crowded during the winter at all.

Looking to stay on a real ranch?

had been searching for a ranch with RV hook-ups in Texas. Mostly what I was finding was RV Parks with the word ranch in their name. Not what we were looking for. After several weeks of internet searching I came upon a gem of a place called the Beaumont Ranch. We had a blast and give it whole hearted recommendation.

Keep in mind this is a ranch so there was a horse pile here and there. They get them cleaned up pretty fast though. Nothing near the RV park.

The bathrooms were pretty far away. We were given access to the bathrooms at the ranch guest rooms. They were awesome. Stone walls, huge showers, and one had a bath surrounded in stone with a waterfall coming into it. Tanner took advantage of the bath.

Facility fun -Fishing, paddle boats, an old western town and a great playground were all free with the stay. Also for a price you can go horse back riding (Patsy and I took turns on a trail ride with Blake and Tanner), on a cattle drive, on the zip line, learn how to rope a calf and some other fun cowboy stuff. There is also a restaurant on site that serves food on Thursday - Sunday nights. There is also a full service spa at the ranch.

Dump station, no full hook-ups, showers. No laundry.

Fort Worth and Waco are 60 minutes away, Dallas 90 minutes.

We got to meet a few of the staff including our quiet Cowboy Trail guide Raul. Everyone was very nice. You can see for so far into the horizon, yet there are hills too. We loved watching the sky at night, so big.

There was only one other RV there. The sites are fairly decent in size, but no picnic tables or anything. The RV park is either an afterthought or a new addition. This is a ranch. We paid $20 a night, plus more for the trail ride.

Walk with the dinos!

I had been looking forward to our stay at Dinosaur Valley State Park for months. I was not disappointed! How amazing to walk in a stream and put your foot in a dinosaur track!

State Parks are usually clean. No exception here. Hot, spacious showers and clean bathrooms.

Small playground. Dinosaur tracks throughout park near river bed. Hiking trails. Two giant fiberglass dinosaurs. There is also a small visitor center that has some displays and info on the tracks, the types of dinosaurs they think made them and the excavation of the tracks themselves.

Dump station, no full hook-ups, showers, dinosaur novelty store. No laundry.
Dino World (didn't go too expensive), Creation Evidence Museum and Fossil Rim Safari (did not go here either) are all very close. Fort Worth is 90 minutes away.

Rangers were helpful, not so much for the camp hosts. Lots of great nature including the river running through the park.
Can't beat state parks for roominess. Of course they rarely have pull-through sites.

We paid $25 a night. We also purchased a Texas State Park card for $60. This saved us $45 in entry fees, plus 1/2 price on the third night, for a total savings of $62. This card will also get us savings and wave all entry fees at future Texas State Parks.

Loved the pelicans!

State Parks keep their grounds tidy!

The bathrooms were very outdated. The two showers were hot but difficult to get set. They did have bars of soap!! Nice little playground, lots of walking paths and trails.

Dump station but only two full hook-ups. No pull-throughs, no laundry no propane, but the camp hosts do sell ice! Not many stores nearby either so go well-stocked.

While there is not a lot to do nearby, the State Park and Wildlife Refuge offer lots of opportunities for exploration. There is also a fish hatchery nearby.

Met two park rangers who were very cordial. Next to a the river with bluffs on the other side and the lake nearby. Lots of trees.

$23 for a night for two nights for full hook-ups. Hardly anyone here when we were here, but the sites were quite nice regardless.

Nice but too much for my blood

We needed a place with wifi near Calico ghost town and we could not find a good deal on one, so we settled on the Barstow, Calico KOA in Daggett, California. Minutes from Calico Ghost Town. Less than an hour from Mojave National Preserve.

Nice lady waited on us. Lots of trees, bushes and shrubs which separate the sites. We paid $45 a night for full hook-ups, pull-through site.

Bathrooms were clean and some were heated if you turn the heater on. Water was hot. They give you coins to operate the showers.

Nice length of sites with picnic table and grill at each pull through. Sewer is like 15 feet behind the rest of the hook-ups. I never get that. Pool, playground and game room. Nice western themed playground.

Comfortable clean, meaning a family can feel fine playing here, yet not grossed out by anything. Plenty of bathrooms, laundry, dump station, full hook-ups, pull-throughs and free wifi. Camp store and restaurant.

Overall it was Nice park, which you can normally count on with KOAs.

We really enjoyed our stay here

Less than a 15 minutes to Barstow.

Staff was mostly helpful San Bernadino County employees. Nestled among hills and mountains with decent amount of smaller trees on sites/

We paid $27 for a night for full hook-ups, pull-through site. This included entrance to Calico both days we were there.

Bathrooms were clean, but you had to pay coins for the showers. Sites were a little short but this time of the year there was plenty of room.

Ghost town within walking distance. Also hiking paths and off-road vehicle paths on site. Kept up and maintained. No laundry or wifi or propane or library.

Served its purpose!

We paid $17.50 a night for partial hook-ups, pull-through site. Bathrooms we're OK.

We were parked in a section reserved for overnighters. While were tight on either side, there was a ton of room behind us and in front of us for the kids to play.

Pool which was closed for winter and a game room and clubhouse. Cleanliness - Average for an older park. Laundry facilities, dump station, swapping library, wifi at clubhouse.

Overall It served it's purpose!

AKA the Wilderness at Silver Dollar City

During our visit to Silver Dollar City near Branson, Missouri, we decided to stay at Silver Dollar City's campground - The Wilderness. The rates were reasonable and they have a free shuttle to SDC, so it seemed a good choice. We were not dissappointed, but I was not wowed like I thought I might be.

So close to Branson with a ton of things to do! Staff was pretty friendly, although I must say I expected "Disney nice." Besides all the trees, there are some nice mountain views in the campground.

$32 for a night - full hook-up. No discounts that I no of unless you have a yearly pass to Silver Dollar City. Bathrooms were Great, warm and roomy showers, clean bathrooms. Plenty of stalls and showers.

Very roomy for an RV park, almost State Park roominess. Two playgrounds and a pool. Game room and walking path as well. Well kept up. Laundry, full hook-ups, dumps, decent size store.

This park made me feel good. We did haircuts for the three little guys here. They had some cute cats around the park. Still it did not make me feel like we were staying near a "magical" theme park.

Nice area for water recreation

We really enjoyed our stay at Eisenhower State Park on the border of Texas and Oklahoma.

Cleanliness - We even saw a volunteer going around picking up trash. None at our site! :) Very nice hot showers, but no soap for washing your hands and no doors on the shower stalls or toilet stalls.

Small playground, Lake Texoma is here with amazing views and a nice little beach. Dump station, a few full hook-ups, showers. No laundry or propane. Ranger Station. Boat dock. Denison 5 minutes away, Dallas 90 minutes.

Staff - Typical State Park Rangers. Professional. Very shady and the lake is amazing. Crowded on Saturday, but we still felt we had plenty of room. Sunday night was very quiet.

Using our Texas State Parks card we had no entrance fees and the 2nd night was free, so we paid $35 for two nights. Not bad!

Better in the warmer months

As we came north for Thanksgiving to visit friends and do some work in the area, we became increasingly uncertain of our decision as the weather became colder. Our visit to Rockford meant we had to find a park open nearby during the winter months. Not an easy task, but we settled on Rock Cut State Park in Loves Park. We have been to this park several times and even tent-camped here. But the cold weather camping here was a new experience for us.

Close to Rockford, which has a few fun things to do, but no major attractions. 90 minutes from Chicago.

Met one Ranger who came on our third day there to collect our fees. Nothing special, nothing to complain about.
Lots of trees, trails and Lake Pierce is right on site. Too cold for us to enjoy it much. We did see wild turkey every morning enjoying the warmth of the bathrooms.

We paid $25 for a night - but just electric sites. They have water hydrants and dumps, but they were closed for the winter. We thought they should have had an off-season rate, but this is the same rate as their summer season. Bathrooms - There were warm showers, after you let them run for awhile.

Sites were decent size. Park was pretty bare and we had lots of room in the adjoining sites to park and store things. this state park has lots to do in nice weather, including a great beach. Decent little playgrounds, nice hiking trails, boat rentals, fishing, etc.. Winter, not so much fun. State Park clean.

Would be better in summer. Winter months you get electrcity and bathrooms. Rock Cut is a nice state park, our hometown park. We did not like their winter policies though.
